For this week’s Wow Wednesday, we’re hosting a proper paper plane workshop and competition. It’s open to families, but honestly, we really want to see the adults get involved in this one. It’s time to channel your inner engineer, tap into that schoolyard nostalgia, and show us what you’ve got.

We’re not just messing around with scrap paper either, there are some great prizes on the line for three categories:

How the day works:
Drop by anytime from 10am onwards to grab your paper and start perfecting your design. At 1pm, we will start judging the most creative designs. Then at 1:30pm, it’s the big moment, the official launch to see whose plane flies the furthest, followed by the winners announcement.

It’s completely free, a bit of a laugh, and a great excuse to show off your folding skills.

Note: This trail is all about outdoor fun, learning about nature, and enjoying the challenge – there are no prizes given at the end, just lots of smiles and great memories!

As you follow your map and search the shop windows around Brewery Square, keep your eyes peeled for special challenge posters! Fill out your answers on your trail sheet as you go:

• SPOT IT: Keep your eyes peeled! Two rare Golden Butterflies are hiding on the Spot It! posters. Can you write down the names of the two stores where you spotted them?
• MATCH IT: Look closely at the patterns and choose the correct answer.
• COUNT IT: Count the butterflies carefully and write down your answers!
• DISCOVER IT: Read the fun butterfly facts—can you figure out which ones are True and which are False?
• DO IT: Complete the fun butterfly movement challenges as you explore the square!

Brewery Square is inviting the local community to join in a spectacular weekend of celebrations as the destination marks its 18th birthday on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th August 2026.

The celebrations begin on Friday 7th August with The BIG Brewery Square Bake Off, inviting amateur bakers of all ages to showcase their culinary creations at Vivo Lounge, Dorchester, from 11am.

Ready, set… bake!

Whether it’s a treasured family recipe or a brand-new masterpiece, entrants are encouraged to bring along their best bake to be judged by a panel of local judges. The winning creations will be announced before all entries are sold during Saturday’s Big Birthday Bash, with proceeds helping to make the celebrations even sweeter. The festivities continue on Saturday 8th August, with a packed programme of free entertainment, family activities and live performances across Brewery Square.

Families can start the day at Nikki’s Little Play Café’s, where little ones can enjoy soft play, along with food and drinks in celebration of Brewery Square’s milestone birthday. (Booking is essential via https://nikkislittleplaycafe.co.uk/)

During the day, MUTT Everything Dog will host a Everything Dog Celebration, giving four-legged friends the chance to enjoy a doggy soft play session, plus pup cakes and other treats in celebration of the big day. (Booking is essential via https://www.mutteverythingdog.co.uk/)

Meanwhile, Creams Café is joining the celebrations with a special £1.80 offer to mark the milestone. The promotion includes Mr Whippy ice cream (without a Flake), regular slush drinks, bottled drinks, and all hot drinks.

HOBBS and Phase Eight will celebrate in style with nibbles and bubbles throughout the day, as customers shop the latest looks in preparation for the evening’s entertainment, with 20% off all items in store!

HALO Fine Art will also be opening late, showcasing a stunning outdoor art exhibition, featuring works by both talented local artists and nationally acclaimed names.

15:30 – 16:15 Mini Athletes (5 – 7 years)

Boost your child’s confidence, coordination, and athletic skills! Designed specifically for toddlers and young kids, this fun and engaging program focuses on the basics: running, jumping, and throwing. It’s all about moving, laughing, and learning new skills in a totally supportive environment.

Prepare for a sensory experience like no other. This June, Brewery Square transforms into a living memorial as we commemorate the massive build-up of military hardware in Dorset that paved the way for the D-Day landings.

From the heavy rumble of tanks to the mechanical roar of vintage bikes, the sights, sounds, and smells of history are returning to the heart of Dorchester.

The Day’s Operations:

• The Early Muster (11am – 5:30pm) Before the convoy arrives, get up close and personal with the machines that defined an era. The Military Vehicle Trust will be on site with a collection of meticulously restored legends. With no ropes and no barriers, it’s just you and the experts who keep these titans running.
• Wartime Melodies with The Decadettes (1:30pm – 2:30pm) Soak up the atmosphere with a live performance from The Decadettes.
• The Junior Games (11am – 5pm) A hands-on way for the next generation to connect with history. Bring the kids down to craft their own Peg Dolls and Model Planes to take home.
• The Armour & Embarkation Convoy Arrival (From 3:30pm) This is the moment the ground starts to shake. Watch as the full Armour & Embarkation convoy rolls into the town.
  • Weymouth Avenue: A spectacular line-up of heavy tanks.
  • The Square: A takeover of lighter military vehicles.
  • Dray Horse Yard: A thundering fleet of vintage bikes.

Temporary Road Closures & Parking Restrictions

To ensure the safe setup and running of the event, strict road closures and a total parking ban will be in place throughout the weekend.

• Affected Roads: Both Pope Street and Copper Street will be completely closed to traffic.
• Closure Timing: Vehicles will be prohibited from entering or parking in these zones from Friday 19th June at 4pm until Sunday 21st June until 1pm.
